Password Safety
Because your passwords are the key to all of your personal information, it is important to choose them wisely and store them in a secure location.
The worst password is one that is shared. This includes sharing by word of mouth, in an email, or entering it in a suspicious website. ITS will never ask for your password.
- Make sure your passwords are not visibly sitting on your desk. They also should not be in a document on your computer, as this can be accessible if your computer is stolen.
- Use complex passwords, with upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. A pass phrase, or short sentence, can be easily memorized. Also, the longer the password, the harder it is to crack.
- Keep in mind that longer passwords are more secure.
- Avoid commonly used passwords, like a name or date, or passwords that are otherwise easy to guess (0000000 or 1234567 for example).
- Use a different password for each site or service that you use.
- Change your password regularly. E-town Network passwords must be changed every 120 days.
- Never type your password in an e-mail. You should not share it with anyone. Real sites and services will never ask for a password in an email.
- Use a password manager program, like Password Safe, to safely store passwords on your computer.
